Title |
Greenwood Cemetery. The Fireman's Monument. |
Description |
Large mount stereoview photograph of the Firemen's Monument in The Green-Wood Cemetery. Published by the Union Stereoscopic View Company. The photograph shows the firemen's monument from outside its gated enclosure. Erected by a committee of volunteer firemen of New York City, the Firemen's Monument memorializes two firemen, Engineer George Kerr and Assistant Foremen Henry Fargis. Sculpted by Robert E. Launitz, the monument is rich in fire-related symbolism, as is the ironwork of the gate. As seen in this image, the gate read, "New-York Fire Department, Incorporated A.D. 1798." |
